Ianto Jones Art and Writing Auction for Children In Need seeks contributors

More information, and a chance to sign up, at the auction’s main web page, here: http://community.livejournal.com/ianto_for_cin/673.html

What is this?
Ianto Jones for Children in Need is a fandom auction held in honour and appreciation of Ianto Jones, organized to benefit BBC Children in Need, a charitable organization helping disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. All money raised will be donated to the charity through the JustGiving page.

Who is Ianto Jones?
Ianto Jones is a fictional character from the British TV series Torchwood, well-loved by fans all over the world. His unexpected and untimely death in the series led to a huge fan reaction, and the fundraising effort Ianto Jones for Children in Need was created as a positive and constructive outlet for fans to express their appreciation for the character and Gareth David-Lloyd, the actor who portrays him.

What does the Save Ianto Jones campaign have to do with it?
The Ianto Jones for Children in Need fundraising effort was created as an outlet for members of the Torchwood fandom saddened by Ianto’s death, and has been supported by the whole of that fandom since its beginnings. Although it has garnered wide support, the Save Ianto Jones campaign has always been the main fundraiser and champion of Ianto Jones for Children in Need. It has planned and run events that have raised significant amounts of money for children, including the hugely successful 4.56 campaign that was held last August.
You don’t have to be a member of the campaign, or to support it, to take part in the auction. It’s for children and for Ianto.

How can I help?
You can bid on fanfic, original fic, vids, cookies, memorabilia, critique/betas, and much more! Or you can offer your skills and services as a writer, vidder, baker, knitter, or whatever else you’d like.

Timing
The auction opens on March 1st, 12:01 one minute after midnight GMT, and closes on March 31st 23:59 one minute before midnight GMT. The sellers can define their own dates of bidding closing, which you can check by tags in their posts. We are also planning special events which will have their own dates.

Geography and currency
This auction is open to all countries, but final donation to Children in Need will be made in British Pound sterling. You can use any of the conversion sites, for example, www.xe.com

What if I don’t have an LJ account?
You can still bid by manually signing your name and contact info.
Selling will be more difficult. If you don’t want to get a free LJ account for this purpose, please email the mods and we’ll figure something out.

I have a question, suggestion, or complaint.
Please contact the mods in Page-a-Mod post.

Call for poetry submissions from Sammy Cahn songs

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Sammy Re-CAHN-sidered

for a proposed anthology of new short works commemorating the centenary of the lyricist’s birth

Sammy Cahn (1913-1993), the Academy- and Emmy-Award-winning lyricist of many of the standards commonly referred to as the “Great American Songbook,” as well as the writer who “put more words into Frank Sinatra’s mouth than any other,” was very vocal in his disagreement with the policy that writers are not able to copyright the titles of their compositions.

In honor of the upcoming centenary of his birth, and with a loving wink at his titular annoyance, the editor is soliciting new poems, flash fiction, flash non-fiction, and micro-dramas, each with the same title as one of his song lyrics. The new pieces need not refer to the songwriter’s lyrics nor be similar in theme or style to the originals; the editor only seeks a variety of poetic approaches toward – and treatments of – Cahn’s titles.

Sammy Cahn’s songs include:

All the Way Bei Mir Bist du Schoen Be My Love Call Me Irresponsible
The Christmas Waltz Come Dance with Me Come Fly with Me Day By Day
Five Minutes More Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out to Dry High Hopes I Should Care I’ll Walk Alone It’s Been a Long, Long Time I’ve Heard That Song Before
Let it Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow Love and Marriage My Kind of Town
Please Be Kind Pocketful of Miracles Rhythm is Our Business
Saturday Night (Is the Loneliest Night of the Week) Teach Me Tonight
(Love is) The Tender Trap The Things We Did Last Summer Thoroughly Modern Millie Three Coins in the Fountain Time After Time To Love and Be Loved
Until the Real Thing Comes Along Walking Happy
and MANY MANY MORE

Synchronized Chaos Wish List

My friend and fellow writer/graduate student/writing workshop leader Gina De Vries blogged today to remember and celebrate a list she’d made of things she wanted and needed in various aspects of her life…and she’d achieved and been blessed with most of them. So, in that same spirit of wonderment and gratitude and curiosity – here’s Synchronized Chaos’ Wants and Needs Wish List:

Wishlist for Synchronized Chaos – and the local writers’ groups:

More worldwide publicity

The latest Writers’ Market book.

More CD’s and books for the lending library..how to write, how to market, etc.

Web design support – someone who knows WordPress and/or laptop repair

Mentors! People to work with and advise our artists, photographers, writers, etc.

Conference speakers for our local free writers’ conference and networking event (planned to take place sometime late next fall.)

Carpool drivers for each of our local spinoff writers’ groups (San Francisco, San Rafael, San Jose, Castro Valley)

Career advising for our writers

People who will volunteer or barter to read and critique/edit people’s writing

Donations to our scholarship fund to send one person (recipient to be determined based on their personal readiness and interest, will NOT be myself) to the San Francisco Writers’ Conference – $450 left to raise

Donations to a random and discreetly available slush fund for folks (not myself!) down on their luck who need contest entry fees, paperback books on writing, bus fare/gas money for literary and art events, cash for coffee and meals at our events, etc.

Resume editing and job networking for our staff and contributors – in this economy we offer this as a service for anyone who’s interested, but would love to have a volunteer with some career counseling/job finding experience offer to take a look

Help finding paid advertising or otherwise increase our sustainable income stream without annoying our readers.

An apartment somewhere mass-transit accessible in the San Francisco Bay Area we can use occasionally to host events and potlucks and receptions.

Pen pals and mentors and sponsors of writing and stamps and other supplies for the incarcerated ladies we write to through Free Battered Women’s survivors’ project. Have invited several to submit to Synchronized Chaos, hoping to print some of their work soon!

Current events-related poetry submissions sought

The editors update the website every day or two with the best work received. What’s best? A genuinely poetic take on a very current and specific news story or event.

See the website at http://www.newverse news.com for guidelines and for examples of the kinds of poems THE NEW VERSE NEWS publishes. Then paste your submission and a brief bio in the text of an email (no attachments, please) to <nveditor(at) yahoo.com> (replace (at) with @).
