Ada Lovelace Day is an international day of blogging (videologging, podcasting, comic drawing etc.!) to draw attention to the achievements of women in technology and science.

Juma is looking for a videographer to produce a short (2-3 minute) PSA-type video featuring our asset-building program.  We want to emphasize the human interest side of this program with focus on our youth, while recognizing our community supporter(s). The video will premiere at our annual fundraising dinner on April 21^st, sponsored by a well-known financial institution. Following the event, the video will be featured on our website and may be used for promotion purposes, including venues such as YouTube.  We are looking for professional quality and welcome artistic/individual approaches to the topic.  Amateurs are welcome.

About the Festival:

The Independent Book Festival is dedicated to providing domestic and international visitors with a diverse presentation of self-published books from writers of all genres.

Self-published authors from across the country are invited to participate in the three day festival.  The general public is invited to purchase their books and meet the writers.  Literary agents/managers, book buyers, publishers, reviewers, media specialists, regional and national segment producers for radio and television, celebrity authors and film producers will not only judge, but be in attendance.  The festival will conclude with an awards ceremony honoring/celebrating the best of the best on the final evening of the event.

What is this?
Ianto Jones for Children in Need is a fandom auction held in honour and appreciation of Ianto Jones, organized to benefit BBC Children in Need, a charitable organization helping disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. All money raised will be donated to the charity through the JustGiving page.

Who is Ianto Jones?
Ianto Jones is a fictional character from the British TV series Torchwood, well-loved by fans all over the world. His unexpected and untimely death in the series led to a huge fan reaction, and the fundraising effort Ianto Jones for Children in Need was created as a positive and constructive outlet for fans to express their appreciation for the character and Gareth David-Lloyd, the actor who portrays him.

What does the Save Ianto Jones campaign have to do with it?
The Ianto Jones for Children in Need fundraising effort was created as an outlet for members of the Torchwood fandom saddened by Ianto’s death, and has been supported by the whole of that fandom since its beginnings. Although it has garnered wide support, the Save Ianto Jones campaign has always been the main fundraiser and champion of Ianto Jones for Children in Need. It has planned and run events that have raised significant amounts of money for children, including the hugely successful 4.56 campaign that was held last August.
You don’t have to be a member of the campaign, or to support it, to take part in the auction. It’s for children and for Ianto.

How can I help?
You can bid on fanfic, original fic, vids, cookies, memorabilia, critique/betas, and much more! Or you can offer your skills and services as a writer, vidder, baker, knitter, or whatever else you’d like.

Timing
The auction opens on March 1st, 12:01 one minute after midnight GMT, and closes on March 31st 23:59 one minute before midnight GMT. The sellers can define their own dates of bidding closing, which you can check by tags in their posts. We are also planning special events which will have their own dates.

Geography and currency
This auction is open to all countries, but final donation to Children in Need will be made in British Pound sterling. You can use any of the conversion sites, for example, www.xe.com

What if I don’t have an LJ account?
You can still bid by manually signing your name and contact info.

Sammy Re-CAHN-sidered

for a proposed anthology of new short works commemorating the centenary of the lyricist’s birth

Sammy Cahn (1913-1993), the Academy- and Emmy-Award-winning lyricist of many of the standards commonly referred to as the “Great American Songbook,” as well as the writer who “put more words into Frank Sinatra’s mouth than any other,” was very vocal in his disagreement with the policy that writers are not able to copyright the titles of their compositions.

In honor of the upcoming centenary of his birth, and with a loving wink at his titular annoyance, the editor is soliciting new poems, flash fiction, flash non-fiction, and micro-dramas, each with the same title as one of his song lyrics. The new pieces need not refer to the songwriter’s lyrics nor be similar in theme or style to the originals; the editor only seeks a variety of poetic approaches toward – and treatments of – Cahn’s titles.
