Poetry from Abigail George

If we kept guns in the house we would all be dead by now

That’s how angry my brother gets

That’s the legacy of apartheid

That’s legacide

Maybe one day

Someone will write a book

about addiction

and then bother to get it right.

Gibran, poor guy!

He felt the weight of the world early on in his young life

One day, my childhood best friend disappeared

In my dreams, I walk the streets

Calling his name

Only to be greeted by the moon and the stars

Only the flowers in springtime are resurrected

Only the inner voice of the trees

And like him, I will never marry

And like Gibran, I will never marry

While I rise and fall,

the poetry is the light

Now my childhood friend

I find you in springtime

I find you in the song of the flowers

Even the stars and moon

acknowledge you now

You are light

You have become the light in me

Yes, my friend, I carry your memory gently now

Yes, my friend, you are the light in me.
