Poetry from Eleanor Hill

doors left open by mistake:
summer heat creeps through thinly woven window panes
leaving soft dapples of sunlight on tender wooden floors

mirrors and makeup scattered across the front porch
shoes stain the floors with mismatched prints

addie lies on top of me, her chest softly rising and falling
i run my fingers through her course brown hair

my bed crowded with loose letters and bundles of blankets
vibrant towels hanging from chestnut railings, blowing in the mountains breeze

wildflowers stand out against the coarse grass that now climbs up the stairway,
an attempt to reclaim what once belonged to the meadow

geese crawl through the field, heads held high with pride
shrieking at the campers that come too close

addie snuggles closer into unaddressed envelopes and empty packing cubes

sending them fluttering off the mattress and onto dusty cabin floors

as the summer heat creeps through the window panes
marking the cabin floors with sunshine

our peace remains ours even though we are not deserving

and our mess remains a mess

even when the sun sets under the mountains, and i am left in darkness

sunlight still dribbles in through the window panes

and doorways
