Night Sounds

Sleeping soundly without a care,

When suddenly I heard a step on the stair

I arose from my bed and tried to be quiet

I was terribly afraid but thought I should try it

To find out what could be that woke me from sleep

So into the hall I did manage to creep

I looked all around but nothing I found.

Suddenly there was music from downstairs,

It sounded like a piano and again I was scared.

I decided I had better take a look and what did I see

But a big old cat running up and down the keys

A window was left open and that’s how he got in

That’s why I heard that terrible din.

So if night sounds disturb you, just think of this.

Those sounds can be funny with such a strange twist!

The Passage of Time

Like the wind blowing here and there

Changing to barely a whisper,

Time eludes us in the passing of days.

We look forward to a lovely spring

After a cold and snowy winter.

Time passes and we awake one morning

To the warming day with its

Promise of blue skies, pretty flowers

The sun in its splendor.

Time passes and soon we hear

Summer rain, thunder and wind.

But when it is over, there is

A beauty to the quiet and stillness we feel.

Again, time passes and the leaves

On the trees start changing color.

We are now in Autumn, a kind of

Magical season with scarecrows, full moons

And children trick or treating.

There is a sunny but cool, crisp air and

You breathe it in because it pleases you.

Finally, time passes and we see snowfalls,  enjoying

The first one as it seems to sit on the trees in a dazzling light.

Pine trees are a picture of such natural beauty

Now we watch with smiles as

Families are playing with their children

And building snowmen.  Sleds are

Brought out for fun , sliding down hills,

Then rushing back up the hill to

Fly down it again and cheeks

Getting red in the cold.

Christmas brings much joy to the

Family celebrations and there is

A different sense of peace in the world

Our passage of time for this year

Is now complete.

The Rising and Setting of the Sun

A new day dawns and there is an eerie silence around us.

We wonder as we look at the darkened sky

And we perceive a tiny sliver of gold appearing.

With a shimmering afterglow that gives one a feeling of

Being in another time and place.

Now the rays of the sun shine bright upon the earth

Our senses awake more intensely

We are one with the panorama before us:

There is a freshening of life upon the earth.

Slowly but steadily we watch the morning sun appear.

It has beauty as shades of pink

begin to stretch out across the sky.

In the quiet of this new day,

we reflect on the gifts of this sun

Our spirits are lifted and we are happy

We are thankful for the warmth and nourishment it provides.

As the day ends, we watch the slow setting of the sun.

The sky becomes a canvas of red, pinks and gold with

Streaks of light clouds blending in so beautifully that

It becomes a palette of colors across the sky.

It is now the quiet time of the night and we rest.

MEMORIES IN A SHOEBOX

Shoeboxes are meant for shoes

Or pictures you don’t want to lose.

My shoebox is filled with stories of old

The pictures are warm with memories untold.

When I look at those days of youth and fun

The memories for us have just begun.

The years fly by and we don’t think of time

Until we find that shoebox of mine.

Those precious memories are like gold

And bring smiles and tears from those days of old

So don’t throw away that shoebox of yours,

It may bring you comfort from days gone by

Because that shoebox is where those stories lie.

A HEARTBEAT AWAY

Winter days are usually long and dreary

Depression can overcome us

We don’t seem to have the energy

Or a spirit that is positive

We look longingly for sunshine and warmth

But soon we find we are just a heartbeat away from spring

Trees budding forth with their new shiny leaves

The green shoots of flowers are poking their tiny

Heads up above the ground.

There is a sweet freshness in the air around us

Our senses have come alive and we

Drink in the breath of renewal in nature and ourselves.

VALENTINE LOVE

Two hearts entwined

In an unbroken circle

A pledge of everlasting love

To the end of time

A circle can become tarnished

Through all the years

But it remains unbroken

Because the memories of those

Words that were spoken so long ago

I love you with all my heart

And the ring remains as

A circle of love.

New Year poem from Joan Beebe

THE BELLS Of NEW YEAR’S

When I was a child, my parents would

Let me stay up until midnight

When the church bells around us would begin to chime

I was entranced by their sound that

Floated through the air on

those crisp winter nights.

It seemed that their canopy of sound

Was also bringing a reason to celebrate

with music, laughter, dancing because

We bring our hopes and dreams into the New

Year that  lies ahead.

NEW YEAR’S CELEBRATION

A New Year is something most

People look forward to in anticipation.

The old year for many of us was filled with

Worry and perhaps health problems.

Fresh and new is the perception in our minds.

So a celebration of “on with the new” and “off with the old”

With parties, music, hats, dancing, streamers and watching

The huge and lighted ball, in New York City’s Times Square,

 slowly move down from

It’s height to the bottom which signals the New Year.

It is a happy celebration because we really have

No idea of what the New Year holds for us.

We all wish Peace and Health in the coming year.

Our hopes are held high for a world of safety,

Contentment and harmony between nations.

And our heads are held high as we move forward

Into the New Year.  We see a light into the future

And our dreams have a purpose to be fulfilled.

A CHRISTMAS SNOWFALL

We who live in northern climes

Begin to wonder if there will be

Snow for Christmas.

The trees are stark against the sky

But there are twinkling lights

Lighting up neighborhoods

With such delight for all to see.

Christmas Eve comes and still no snow

Late at night, we look out our window

And are given a beautiful surprise.

The snow is swirling with the wind

And making unique and lovely patterns

Upon window panes

We open our door and watch in awe

The beauty of the scene before us

That nature provided on this

Quiet and Holy Christmas Eve.
